First Foot

1982, Hogmanay, 10 minutes to go,

The dug’s tail is waggin’ as we head oot to the snow,

Ah got ma booze, ma shortbread and lump of coal,

Am takin’ nae chances…………

Bringing luck and prosperity is the goal,

Am no alone as a look around,

Half of Tay Place is walking the snow covered ground,

We all share some banter till Big Ben strikes 12,

Same time next year lads if we all survive,

Then knock the door and let the New Year begin,

The door is opened and I’m welcomed in,

These things I miss at this time of the year,

A moment in time so far from here,

But seared into memory and rekindled at will,

The memories and faces haunt me still,

But I’m glad that they do,

To reminisce, to savour,

The drinking but mostly the haver,

The hangover and the Bru,

And you never know you might even get lucky too,

  1. Great wee piece. I grew up in Tay Place and spent many an enjoyable Hogmanay party – including 1982 – in my mates family home in the close at the top of the street. Corseford was a great place to grow up. A happy new year to you and very best wishes for 2023.

    1. Thanks Stephen, I have to agree Corseford was a pretty good place to be. Spent many a night at the Cochrane House too. I hope you have a great 2023, cheers 🥃

  2. Cokey hoose was our ‘regular’. Great boozer. Always something or another happening in it.
